Microplastics are small plastic fragments typically less than 5 millimeters in size, resulting from the breakdown of larger plastic debris or manufactured intentionally for use in single use products. These tiny particles pose significant harm to water systems as they are ingested by aquatic organisms, which may lead to physical and chemical impacts. Additionally, microplastics can absorb and concentrate persistent organic pollutants, which then enter the food chain, posing potential risks to the ecosystem.

Understanding the impacts of microplastics is crucial in the industry for several reasons. Firstly, it informs the development of more sustainable materials and processes that minimize plastic waste. Secondly, industries such as water treatment, fisheries, and agriculture can implement better practices and technologies to mitigate the entry and effects of microplastics in natural and human-made ecosystems. Lastly, regulatory bodies rely on scientific research to set standards and policies that ensure environmental and public health safety, driving industries to adopt more environmentally responsible operations.
